| TCB 02242 Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series Volume 24
Jazz Live Trio with guests: Gianni Basso / Guy Lafitte
|
|
| | |
| It was in 1993 that TCB - The Montreux Jazz label launched its Swiss Radio Days series of albums and began releasing previously unpublished concert recordings by major jazz artists, which have been aired by Swiss Radio since 1946. At Radio Studio Zurich there were also more than 100 live concerts with solo guest artists who were backed by the Jazz Live Trio, the house rhythm section, led by German pianist Klaus Koenig, with Switzerland’s Isla Eckinger or Peter Frei on bass. The drum chair was occupied successively by Switzerland’s Alex Bally, South Africa’s Makaya Ntshoko, Switzerland’s Pierre Favre and Switzerland’s Peter Schmidlin. This Swiss Radio Days compilation features two saxophone players from continental Europe – Italy’s Giovanni “Gianni” Basso (1931 – 2009) and France’s Guy Lafitte (1927 – 1998) – both of whom, I would suggest, have had less recognition than they deserve. Their playing on this album is extrovert, exuberant and exhilarating and they get excellent support from the resident rhythm section.

| Martien Oster met Vince Benedetti in 1983 in Holland while playing with the Frank Grasso Big Band. Vince wrote a couple of arrangements for the band and filled the piano chair at the time. Right away Martien sensed his knowledge of the music and the expertise that comes with being a seasoned musician, something that is evident when reading Vince’ biography. Martien was able to get a lesson or two from Vince and then Vince moved back to Switzerland. Three years later Martien moved to Switzerland himself, where his real training with Vince began. For over four years he collaborated with Vince on various projects, including Vince’ Jazz Heritage Big Band, gigs with vocalist Deborah Brown and recording dates with Isla Eckinger as well as with Diana Krall. Vince wrote most of the songs, as well as all the lyrics for Diana’s first CD (Heartdrops – TCB 22182) back in 1990. It became clear to Martien that besides being a good player, Vince is also a fine composer. Most of his songs moved Martien personally in a way that can only be described as profound. So, now it’s payback time! Here is a CD with exclusively original material by Vince Benedetti.

TCB 30502
koblizek & baumgartner
'Broken Shadows'
|
|
| | |
| This CD is the second recording by koblizek & Baumgartner for TCB. The first one was TCB 27102 J.E.P. and is still available. This second CD is again very interesting and listenable on account of a well prepared, carefully selected and excellently executed program. Reference is duly paid towards the Strayhorn/Ellington corner of exquisite jazz composing by a mature to the point interpretation of <Lush life>, one of the most beautiful ballads in jazz, Ellingtons masterpiece <Black and tan fantasy> is given a thoughtful treatment and adding Ornette Coleman’s <Broken shadow> to the lot shows deep understanding by both musicians of a time period spanning at least 50 years of jazz’ development. Pianist Baumgartner’s contribution consists of five compositions moving in different directions. Three more compositions have been written by reedman Koblizek. It is interesting to note, that he wrote a piano solo for his partner who himself contributed a composition for baritone solo.
